Halftime at a now sunny Royal Stadium where Bethel leads by just three despite a fairly dominant performance in the first half.
The Royals got on the board first when Nathaniel Van Loon kicked a 27-yard field goal. Jimmie Mattson countered with a 49-yard field goal for the Johnnies. But a 1-yard TD run by Jesse Phenow put Bethel up 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.
A 44-yard field goal by Mattson cut the gap to 10-6, but Bethel mounted an 11-play, 78-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard TD run on fourth down by quarterback Erik Peterson that made the score 17-6 with 6:14 to play.
However, three Bethel penalties helped open the door for the Johnnies on a 12-play, 71-yard drive that Harry Awe capped with a 2-yard touchdown to cut the gap to four.
The Royals moved the ball down to the St. John’s 30 late in the first half, before a Bobby Fischer interception ended the threat.
Peterson is 17 of 22 passing for 188 yards with an interception. Connor Bruns is 11 of 19 passing for 109 yards for the Johnnies. Bethel has 274 yards of total offense. St. John’s has just 141.
Jesse Phenow has 12 carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. Steve Johnson has six carries for 24 yards for the Johnnies.
Wade Powers has three catches for 35 yards. Josh Bungum has three catches for 30 yards. Mitch Hallstrom has five catches for 57 yards for Bethel. Brandon Marquardt has four catches for 59 yards.
Alex Powell left the game for St. John’s with a sprained ankle. His return is questionable. Starting tackle Jack Hedlund is out with a possible ACL sprain.
