Essler earns MIAC honor (so does Dobson)

St. John’s junior Jake Essler has been named this week’s MIAC special teams player of the week.

Essler, a New London-Spicer graduate, returned a punt 85 yards in the second quarter of his team’s 38-35 loss to St. Olaf Saturday at Clemens Stadium. The return tied for the sixth-longest in school history and was the first punt return for a touchdown by a Johnnies player since 2004.

Oles quarterback Dan Dobson was named offensive player of the week. He threw for 389 yards and five touchdowns. GHe broke the school’s career touchdown passing record and now ranks second in school history in total completions.
