St. John’s football coach Gary Fasching celebrated the completion of his first week on the job by taking part in a live Newsmaker web chat at sctimes.com Friday afternoon.
You can find the replay of that chat here: http://www.sctimes.com/interactive/article/20130104/SPORTS04/130102003/Newsmaker-chat-St-John-s-football-coach-Gary-Fasching
I talked with him for a bit afterward and will have a short story in Saturday’s newspaper. Here are a few of the salient highlights:
On how the recruiting process has been going:
“Recruiting is the big focus right now. At this time of year, it has to be. Fortunately, we have a good staff and we haven’t let any kids fall through the cracks as we’ve gone through this process (the search for a new coach). Now we have to get those kids on campus for visits, and I’m expecting to be making some home visits as well.”
On what his coaching staff will look like next season - something Fasching and school officials have been working on this week. He said he hopes things can be finalized on that front by the end of next week, but it may take a bit longer:
“A lot goes into it. We’re looking at some shuffling and restructuring. That’s not something you can do in one day.
“There will be restructuring. That’s the best way to say it.”
On his desire to create a JV program, something that may or may not be able to be accomplished by next season:
“It’s certainly something we want to do. But we haven’t done it here. So we have to figure out how we do it, how we fund it, how we staff it, and what nights we’d play. There’s a lot that goes into it.”
