St. John’s senior saefty Nolan Lortz has been named this week’s MIAC defensive player of the week.
The St. Cloud Tech graduate finished with 10 tackles — including eight solo — and returned an interception 22 yards to the St. Thomas 21-yard line to set up a field goal as the Johnnies upset the Tommies 20-18 Saturday in St. Paul.
St. John’s improved to 3-0 with the victory and earned its first top 25 national ranking since the 2010 season. The Johnnies are ranked No. 21 in both the D3football.com and AFCA Division III polls this week. Bethel is ranked No. 5 in the D3football.com poll and St. Thomas is ranked No. 6. Augsburg and Concordia each received votes.
Concordia senior Bryce Hentges — a Sauk Centre graduate — was named special teams player of the week. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown and averaged 41.5 yards on four returns as the Cobbers defeated St. Olaf 33-29 Saturday to improve to 3-0 as well. The Cobbers take on the Johnnies at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clemens Stadium in the Homecoming game at St. John’s.
Hamline sophomore Austin Duncan was named offensive player of the week after rushing for a school record 298 yards in his team’s 20-17 overtime loss to Carleton Saturday.
