The MIAC announced changes to its postseason conference tournament Tuesday as a result of scheduling woes created by the continuing winter weather.
Because not every team will be able to complete their full regular season, the conference will alter the tournament format this season and include all 12 MIAC members.
The tournament will now run May 3-5 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The new format will feature four three-team pools playing round-robin games Friday. The four first-place teams from each pool will advance to a four-team, double-elimination tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Each poll will include two teams seeded in the top eight (No. 1 and 8, No. 2 and 7, No. 3 and 6 and No. 4 and 5). The final four seeds will be randomly added to each pool. The format was first proposed in a conference call of MIAC coaches last Friday. The coaches will continue to work on a seeding formula.
Meanwhile, the MIAC will continue to follow the redone baseball schedule announced last week. But the MIAC athletic directors have approved a conditional proposal put forward by the league’s coaches to expand the postseason field if not all conference games are able to be completed.
