SJU football Thursday update

Happy Halloween everyone.

A little late getting this up because of trick-or-treating this evening – we got a steady flow of trick-or-treaters on the Southeast side of St. Cloud.

But I did hit part of the Johnnies’ practice Thursday afternoon at Clemens Stadium.

Senior quarterback Connor Bruns was again practicing. He’s been practicing all week. But head coach Gary Fasching said who will start at quarterback in Saturday’s matchup with Gustavus in St. Peter remains a question mark.

Nick Martin has taken more of the reps in practice this week and Fasching said they have tried to work Bruns back in a little more slowly as he recovers from a sprained foot.

Fasching said the coaching staff will probably decide on a starter based on how practice goes on Friday.

Sophomore running back Sam Sura, who has been out with a sprained right lateral collateral ligament, also practiced Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. He is expected to see at least some action against the Gusties. But freshman Jakob Certeza and senior Jake Essler are expected to get the start in the backfield.

And that’s a wrap for now.
