A little late posting tonight after being out in the cold covering Sartell’s 28-6 victory over Sauk Rapids in the Section 8-5A quarterfinals in Sartell.
But I was on hand in Collegeville earlier in the afternoon.
The final Red and White JV intersquad scrimmage of the season at St. John’s was supposed to be played Sunday.
But the snowy weather caused that game to be postponed until Tuesday afternoon at Clemens Stadium, which meant the varsity players on the Johnnies’ roster got the afternoon off, though many of them were on hand watching.
I took in some of the scrimmage, which pitted the offense against the defense. Mirroring their varsity counterparts, I saw a number of turnovers recorded by the defense.
But there were some offensive highlights as well. Peter Zasmeta, the freshman wide receiver out of Aitkin, made a nice catch on the sidelines during the two-minute drill. And freshman quarterback A.J. LaPanta connected with classmate Reed Dunbar on a touchdown pass.
Freshman wide receiver Jack Peru, an Arizona native, had a nifty run for the 2-point conversion.
The Johnnies plan to practice Wednesday and Thursday this week before taking Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. They will then return to the field next Monday as preparations for a road game on Nov. 2 at Gustavus continue.
Sounds like the plan is to hold sophomore running back Sam Sura (sprained LCL) out of practice this week and revaluate him come Monday. Senior QB Connor Bruns (sprained foot) sounds more day-to-day this week.
Head coach Gary Fasching touched on both players – and many other topics – in his weekly live chat at sctimes.com Tuesday morning.

And that’s a wrap for tonight.
