A number of players were taking advantage of the bye week to rest various injuries as the St. John’s football team returned to the practice field Tuesday afternoon at Clemens Stadium.
Offensively, running back Nick Schneider, tight end Wade Powers and offensive linemen Pete Schwarz, Alex Jarosz and Ross Carlson all did not practice. Defensively, Jake King, Maze Thompson and Ricky Davis also did not practice.
Schneider (pulled groin) and Maze Thompson (strained petellar tendon) left Saturday’s win over Carleton. Everyone else played and were resting Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
It doesn’t appear any of the injuries will keep the players out of action when St. John’s returns to action against Gustavus on Oct. 27.
Meanwhile, junior quarterback Connor Bruns – who has missed the past three games after separating his right throwing shoulder in a loss at Concordia on Sept. 22 – was still in street clothes Tuesday.
But he was able to begin throwing the ball again.
“We started with short five-yard throws today,” Bruns said. “I’m just trying to work my way back into it. Tomorrow, I’ll go a little longer and just see how it goes this week.”
The Johnnies also went about 30 minutes of pretty spirited scout-on-scout work after practice.
