Happy Election Night everyone.
The St. John’s football team was back at practice this afternoon at Clemens Stadium preparing for Saturday’s season finale at Bethel. But the Johnnies will play that game without freshman quarterback Nick Martin, who left last Saturday’s win at Hamline with what is now officially a high-ankle sprain.
Martin will be in a walking boot for three weeks, which means he is out Saturday. Junior Connor Bruns returned from his own injury (separated shoulder) and relieved Martin against the Pipers.
“I’ll be in the boot for three weeks and then I’ll start rehabing the ankle after that and get ready for next year,” Martin said.
Martin said it will be tough to sit out Saturday’s matchup against the Royals.
“I was really looking forward to playing Bethel,” Martin said. “I actually grew up going to Bethel games. I’d go to a couple of their games every year with my best buddy and I know (head coach Steve) Johnson pretty well. It’s unfortunate I can’t be out there battling against them. But I’ll be there cheering on the team and cheering on Connor.”
I’ll have a story up on the main sports page later tonight on head coach John Gagliardi, who said Tuesday that he isn’t thinking at all this week about what the future will bring, but rather simply focusing on Bethel. So look for that amidst a sea of election stories.
Good night everybody.
