A bit late posting tonight as I was back on the prep football preview trail at St. Cloud Cathedral, catching up with former St. John’s standout Andy Auger as he takes over the head coaching job of a team quarterbacked by senior Jeff Fasching, the son of Gary Fasching, who is of course a former head coach at Cathedral himself.
But I digress. The Johnnies practiced this afternoon at a sun-baked and toasty Clemens Stadium. I mentioned on the live chat that one of the biggest differences I’ve noticed this season is just the speed at which practice has moved. That was the case again today when the team ran – according to Fasching afterward – 55 plays in about 35 minutes of 11-on-11 work.
A few notes:
* Sophomore guard Ben Kuhr, who is coming back from a torn ACL a year ago, continues to sit out because of soreness in the knee. He is being evaluated day-to-day.
* Senior tackle Jack Hedlund sat out Tuesday’s practice. He said he took a shot to the head Monday and sitting out Tuesday was a precautionary measure.
* Senior backup linebacker Ricky Davis has left the team, the coaching staff confirmed.
* The team is expected to hold its first two-a-day of the preseason Wednesday, practicing in both the morning and afternoon.
