St. John’s University freshman kicker Alexi Johnson was named the MIAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Johnson made a pair of extra points, including a crucial game-tying PAT following a five-yard penalty, as well as the game-winning 40-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the Johnnies’ 17-14 comeback win at Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday.
The freshman’s reported career high in high school was 37 yards.
The boot was the longest field goal for an SJU freshman kicker since Brandon Keller (2001-04) made a 41-yard field goal in the 25-10 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the 2001 season opener. Concordia junior quarterback Griffin Neal was named offensive player of the week. Carleton senior defensive back Josh Estes claimed defensive honors.
