SJU Tuesday update

Practice just concluded at St. John’s. The team is now getting into the regular season schedule with practices at 4:15 p.m. each afternoon at Clemens Stadium.

A few notes:

* Several players are back practicing this week. They include offensive tackle Jack Hedlund, who was out with a bruised collarbone, cornerback Alex Powell (shoulder), wide receiver Ben Krebsbach and running back Harry Awe (hamstring). All are expected to be available to play when the Johnnies open the season against Northwestern (Minn.) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Collegeville.
Defensive tackle Nate Blenker remains out after taking a blow to the head about a week-and-a-half ago now.
And the news is also not good for sophomore quarterback Johnny Benson, who was expected to be the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart. The grandson of Johnnies head coach John Gagliardi has an injured right elbow and he said the thought is it is likely season-ending.
He said he felt a pop in practice last Friday. He plans to undergo an MRI sometime in the next couple of weeks.

* The temporary bleachers in the end zone nearest Warner Palaestra at Clemens Stadium were going up this week. But unlike in past seasons, no temporary bleachers are planned in front of the hill to the right of the main grandstand this fall.

* Just a plug: The 2012 St. John’s preview package will run Wednesday, both online and in print.
