Halftime in St. Joseph where St. Benedict leads by eight after what was largely a back-and-forth first half. Gustavus took an 11-7 lead on a 3-pointer by Julia Dysthe, but Blazers answered back – scoring 10 of 13 points over a stretch (led by five from Tish Alexander) to go up 19-14.
The Gusties tied the score at 19 on a basket by Abby Rothenbuehler, but a field goal and free throw by Morgan Dale put St. Benedict back on top 22-19 and the Blazers have not trailed again.
Gustavus twice cut the gap to as little as five late in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Brianna Barrett with about 40 seconds to play made the score 35-27.
St. Benedict is shooting just 31.3 percent (10-32) from the field. Gustavus is 10-for-22 (45.5 percent). But the Blazers have four 3-pointers while the Gusties have just two and St. Benedict is 11-for-13 at the free throw line. Gustavus is just 5-for-8.
The Blazers also hold a 22-15 edge in rebounding.
Barrett has nine points to lead St. Benedict. Alexander and Whitney Canton each have seven. Dysthe has eight to lead the Gusties.
