St. Catherine 70, St. Benedict 69 (F)

St. Catherine freshman Abby Torgerson stole an inbound pass and took the ball down the court for a go-ahead layup with under 30 seconds to play as St. Catherine stunned St. Benedict 70-69 Wednesday night at Claire Lynch Hall.

A basket at the buzzer by the Blazers’ Allison Newton cut the gap to one.

It was the first loss of the season for the Blazers, who fell to 3-1. The Wildcats – who beat St. Benedict for the first time since the 2006-07 season – improved to 2-2 – matching their victory total from a year ago.

Sophomore Gabby Zehrer had 24 points to lead St. Catherine. Senior Brianna Barrett had 19 points to lead St. Benedict.

The Blazers were picked to finish second in the MIAC’s preseason coaches’ poll. St. Catherine was picked to finish last.
