St. John’s 24, Hamline 3 (H)

Halftime in St. Paul and the Johnnies lead by 21.

St. John’s struck first when Nick Martin connected with Josh Bungum on a nice-looking 30-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the game.

But after Alex Powell fumbled a punt, Daniel Kim recovered and Hamline took over the ball at the St. John’s 13, though the Pipers had to settle for a 38-yard field goal by John Broback that cut the gap to 7-3.

A pair of 3-yard touchdown runs by Jake Essler put the Johnnies up 21-3. Then a late interception by Bobby Fischer set up a 20-yard field goal by Jimmie Mattson on the final play of the first half.

Martin injured an ankle in the second quarter and has not returned. Connor Bruns saw a series early, then has played in Martin’s absence.

Steve Johnson has eight carries for 57 yards. Harry Awe has five carries for 42 yards. Essler has four carries for 20 yards and two touchdowns. Bruns is 4 of 11 passing for 41 yards. Martin was 2 of 4 for 54 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Austin Duncan has seven carries for 25 yards for Hamline. Cam Knudsen started the game at quarterback in place of the injured Kevin Ackerley. But Jack Swanberg has taken his place.

The Johnnies had 234 yards of total offense in the first half. Hamline had just 50. St. John’s had 13 first downs to Hamline’s 2.
