St. John’s 28, St. Olaf 21 (H)

Halftime in Collegeville where the Johnnies lead by seven after a wild first half.

Nick Martin got things started for St. John’s with a 57-yard touchdown run that put the Johnnies on top 7-0 at the 10:56 mark of the first quarter. St. Olaf answered with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Dan Dobson to Michael Thai to tie the score, then the Johnnies got a 1-yard touchdown run from Nick Schneider and an 85-yard punt return by Jake Essler (the first St. John’s punt return for a touchdown since 2004).

That gave the Johnnies a 21-7 lead with 11:36 to play in the first half. But Dobson connected with Asp on a 34-yard touchdown pass to cut the gap to 21-14. Martin scored again on a 2-yard touchdown run with 4:58 to play. But the Oles got a late touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Dobson to Jake Schmiesing with 28 seconds to go in the second quarter and cut the gap to 28-21.

The two teams combined to miss four field goals in the first half, including a 51-yard attempt by St. John’s kicker Jimmie Mattson as time expired in the first half.

The Johnnies are having a rough afternoon against the pass. Dobson is 21 of 24 passing for 290 yards with three touchdowns. But the Oles have just 34 yards rushing.

St. John’s – which rushed for 50 yards total the past two games – had 149 yards rushing in the first half. Martin had three carries for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Schneider had seven carries for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Martin was also 5 of 8 passing for 105 yards, including a nice 47-yard completion to Rob Voshell that set up a touchdown.
