About the Johnnies: St. John’s snapped a five-game losing streak with a 63-46 win at St. Mary’s Monday night. Junior Seth Marx led the way with 15 points, including 13 in the first half. Senior Chris Neumann added 10 points and five rebounds. The Johnnies fell 75-59 to the Pipers in the MIAC opener for both teams on Nov. 28 in St. Paul. Head coach Jim Smith now has 747 career victories.
About the Pipers: Hamline has been playing short-handed since a series of suspensions following an incident at the team hotel after a game on Dec. 31 that led to assault charges against freshman Eugene Lawrence (since dismissed from the team). Pipers athletic director Jason Verdugo said as of Monday night’s 78-62 loss to Bethel, all of those player suspensions will have been served. Head coach Nelson Whitmore remains suspended indefinitely with Verdugo running the team in his absence. Hamline has lost four straight since the suspensions, including a forfeit to Gustavus on Jan. 5.
