A heartbreaker for the Johnnies is over at Clemens Stadium.
Jimmie Mattson missed a 36-yard field goal attempt wide left with 5.3 seconds remaining and St. Olaf held on for a 38-35 victory.
The Johnnies led much of the way, but St. Olaf tied the score at 28-28 when Dan Dobson connected with Jake Schmiesing on a pair of third quarter touchdown passes.
St. John’s retook the lead 35-28 when freshman Nick Martin connected with classmate Josh Bungum on a 6-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. But Lucas Wainman skipped a 53-yard field goal across the crossbar with 7:52 to play.
Then Dobson connected with Stephen Asp on a 19-yard touchdown pass that gave the Oles the lead with 3:43 remaining.
Dobson finished the game 32 of 39 for 389 yards and five touchdowns.
The Johnnies (0-3 MIAC, 2-3 overall) have now lost three straight after a 2-0 start. And they have now lost three straight years in their Homecoming game.
