The St. John’s defense has had a long night, surrendering 252 yards of total offense and allowing the Falcons’ to convert 5 of 10 times on third down.
But penalties have cost Wisconsin-River Falls. The Falcons were penalized 7 times for 65 yards in the first half, and two key penalties definitely cost them points on their opening drive which reached the St. John’s 10, but ended in a unsuccessful 39-yard field goal attempt.
The Johnnies offense meanwhile has largely been held in check after scoring on their first drive. St. John’s had 99 yards of total offense in the first half, but 78 of those yards came on that first drive.
Jake Essler has been a highlight. He has 6 carries for 46 yards and a TD. Nick Martin is 5 of 8 passing for 44 yards.
For Wisconsin-River Falls, sophomore Jake Kusilek has been a terror for the St. John’s defense. He has 9 carries for 80 yards and is 13 of 21 passing for 119 yards and a TD.
