End of the first quarter and it has been a rough start for the St. John’s defense.
River Falls advanced as far as the Johnnies’ 10 on its first drive before a series of penalties led to a 39-yard field goal attempt that fell well short.
The Johnnies answered back with an 11-play, 78-yard drive capped off by a 2-yard TD run by Jake Essler to take a 7-0 lead with 5:34 to play in the first quarter.
But the Falcons came right back down the field, driving 73 yards in 10 plays on a drive kept alive on an offsides call on St. John’s on a River Falls’ punt. Ryan Kusilek then hit a wide-open Charles Dixon on a 19-yard TD pass with 31 seconds to go in the quarter.
