Women’s basketball: St. Cloud State 69, Jamestown 55

St. Cloud State came from behind to defeat Jamestown College 69-55 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.

It was the home opener for the Huskies. The NAIA Jimmies led 34-30 at the half, but the Huskies outscored them 39-21 in the final 20 minutes.

“We got good looks in the first half, but they just didn’t fall in,” SCSU head coach Lori Fish said. “Jamestown’s a really good team. We felt we could eventually wear them down in the second half and that’s what happened.

“We’re still trying to find ourselves. That’s what these nonconference games are for.”

Jessica Benson led St. Cloud State (2-0) with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, Sam Price had 17 points and freshman forward Lexy Petermann had 10 points.

The Huskies outscored the Jimmies (5-1) 24-16 in the paint, had a 39-35 rebound advantage and shot 39 percent from the field.

“We had some nerves since it was our home opener,” Benson said. “There are some things we have to get out of the way in these nonconference games. We have things to get better at. As the season progresses we’ll start to play more as a team and continue to get better.”

A 12-0 run late in the second half helped the Huskies overcome the Jimmies. Benson had six points during that run from the 5:34 to 2:59 marks.
