MINNEAPOLIS – Forward Amanda Kessel had two goals and two assists and freshman forward Hannah Brandt had one goal and three assists to lead top-ranked Minnesota to a 7-1 WCHA women’s hockey win over St. Cloud State on Friday at Ridder Arena.
It was the season-opener for the Huskies. The Gophers (1-0 WCHA, 3-0 overall) are the defending national champions and were 4-for-7 on the power play.
Vanessa Spataro, a freshman forward from Stouffville, Ontario, scored her first collegiate goal at 13:49 of the second period to cut the Gophers’ lead to 4-1.
Sophomore goalie Julie Friend had 37 saves for the Huskies, who were 0-for-6 on the power play. The two teams play at 4:07 p.m. at Ridder in the second game of the series.
